The BEST Model Y Yet? (Tesla Model Y L Six-Seat 2026 Review)

Automobiles

Tesla has been waiting for a new model for years now, and although the six-seat, three-row Model Y L shares most of its name with Tesla’s most popular, there are plenty of changes to the Hyundai Ioniq 9, Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90 rival.

For a start, it’s the first Tesla in Australia available with vehicle-to-load, it’s also the first non-Performance Model Y to feature adaptive dampers and under-thigh adjust. Physically, the Y L is larger — longer, taller and riding on a longer wheelbase, but the same width.

Priced from $74,900 before on-road costs in Australia, the Model Y L comes in Long Range AWD trim only, with second-row captain’s chairs and a 19-speaker sound system. Not much more money for a lot more equipment than a regular Model Y.

Road test editor John Law takes a first look at the Model Y L before it goes on-sale officially in Australia to see how it stacks up.

  1. I cannot explain how bad I want this car to replace my existing model y

I have two teen sons both in the 6ft 3-6 range the extra size car would be great for long drives (900km)

It just looks amazing, the way the X should have been, sorry Elon hated the gull wing doors

  2. Fully useable 5 seat 😂 Bro, have you ever sat in the middle seat? The middle seat is there to store junk.
And lets face it, no adult is sitting in those back seats. It's never happened and no one is buying it for that.
I checked out the EV9 and it STARTS at $97k. If you want similar features to the tesla, expect to pay almost $120k for the GT-line. And $120k for a Hyundai, I want what they're smoking.

  3. Why are they so ugly? Can't get past it! As soon as I saw the first clip of you driving I nearly vomited. Elon needs to get some sense of fashion for these cars because yes, some of us just won't be caught dead in a FUGLY CAR.

  4. For my family, I still prefer my 5 seater Tesla Model Y. It can accommodate 5 people comfortably in the second row and I'll have plenty of space left in the boot for luggage and other stuff. If I get a six seater, the fifth person should be sitting uncomfortably in the 3rd row and plenty of boot space will be unusable. The new front headrests and rear seat cooling option are nice to have, but not too important

  5. That… seemed like the dumbest and most unintuitive way to get into the back row. Why not just climb in, u know put your front foot into the feet area first then slide yourself in? You know, like a normal person? I don’t think anyone has ever tried getting into that space or seat like that!

  6. I love the black headliner, reminds me of my old Ludicrous X, in that X the Port Door Sensor gave up, the wiring loom to the third row burnt out, the HV cables and Lugs to the rear engine and the rear engine blew up, the front drive shafts blew, bubbles on the glovebox and perished roof seals and all that happened in 63,000 km 😂 but I have ordered one of these already as Tesla has come a long way and I couldn’t wait to get another 6 seater after they cancelled the Model X in RHD 😊

  7. I am not sure the idea is to have a 188cm driver, with a 188cm passenger sitting behind them and then a 188cm passenger behind them squeezing into the third row.

  8. Well……your kindergarten kids are the only ones who will be in the back row!
    It's pretty much a 4-seater, with a limited market.
Be better if you could "option out" the rear seat, increasing the storage, and "option in", a proper spare-wheel.

  9. You are a 188cm tall adult mate, not what you so called full grown adult. The average height for adult men in Australia is about 175.6 cm. And I having tried the car myself, can fit in the back quite comfortably. Just a suggestion may worth to reconsider how your perception differs to the norm?

  10. This is Tesla trying everything – throwing even kitchen sink at their money cow Model Y to get some sales back, but they have the problem that they need to update platform underneath Y and 3 completely to compete with Chinese automakers.

  11. Tesla fans jumping in joy for an extended version of an old model
No new battery no better charging minimal backseat space
Basically a minimalist 6 seat boring robotaxi
The only thing is the FSDS otherwise its not worth it

  12. Colour = superb. Range = impressive. Adaptive suspension = better ride = Excellent. Extra space/seating a plus but not so the access! Looking fwd to a test drive! Nicely reviewed John. 🚙 👏

  13. As someone with two kids that only needs the third row seats occasionally I think this is far better than a 7 or 8 seat model with bench seats. With bench seats, once you put 2 baby seats in the middle row its almost impossible to access the third row seating, with the 2 2 2 layout of this 6 seat Tesla you can put your baby seats in the middle row and then still have access to the third row by walking up the centre isle.
