Huge thanks to the owner of the U8 for allowing us time with the car and to Ryan Griffiths at Syvecs (https://www.instagram.com/ryansyvecs/) for his help in organising it!
Has China finally built a real luxury car to take on the likes of Range Rover and Bentley?!
Mat’s over in Dubai, and he’s got his hands on the Yangwang U8! It’s a colossal SUV packed with tech and luxury features, but does it offer enough to take on the established elite?! Let’s take a closer look…
Starting with the design, it’s clear that Yangwang has taken inspiration from one very recognisable luxury car – the Land Rover Defender! Looking at the car from the side, the overall look and shape have clearly been ‘borrowed’ from the Defender. The shape of the body panels and the door mirrors was clearly inspired by Land Rover, and the same can be said for the spare wheel position at the rear of the car. However, at the front end, Yangwang has clearly gone in a different direction, with a huge grille flanked either side by angled headlights that give it a load of presence on the road!
Step inside, and the U8 is a seriously luxurious place to be. There’s leather and soft-touch materials in pretty much every element of the interior, including two 50kw wireless charging pads that are lined with Alcantara! The physical buttons on the steering wheel feel solid and well-made, and the digital dials and infotainment screens are both large and super responsive. There’s a fridge included in the centre console, screens for the rear passengers, and all seats have massage functions. The interior of the U8 is a seriously well-made car!
Despite its size and the fact that it weighs almost 3.5 tonnes, the Yangwang U8 only houses a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol under the bonnet! However, that’s not all… There’s a 50kWh battery pack and four electric motors – one for each wheel! The petrol engine is also largely used just to power the battery pack once it’s out of charge. As a result, the U8 can produce an amazing 1,196hp and 1,280Nm!
Of course, a car of this size doesn’t come cheap, with the equivalent price of the car in China working out to £130,000! So is it really worth it? And does it stand a chance of dethroning class leaders like the Range Rover and Bentayga? You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

I would rather have a Rolls Royce (any) than all Chinese cars together at once.
Can you imagine a poster of a Chinese car (any) on anybody’s wall.
Fat chance
👨🏾💻🔭🇺🇬🌍. We await the next gen BYD Shark TDi-PHEV 4WD 🛻⚡🔋 truck
Yangwang 😂
The front of that garbage is inspired by the nissan patrol
For me there is no such thing as too expensive for a Chinese car. Especially at the level of car building they are now. The tech things impress me much more than the bling.
If I had the spending money to just import a car for giggles. I definitely would order up one of these. I like the exterior design especially the front end and headlight assembly and the interior is luxury at its finest. Plush leather and buttons everywhere to do whatever you want. Why not go U8 yangway or however it’s spelled I dig it 😂
being chinese will work 5 days and it will brake down😁
China is known for for flashy but terrible long term quality control and terrible service.
Is he forgot the main fixtures on purpose or what? Because the car is heaven on earth.
Too chilidish. No class there…
Yangwang means Esteem in Chinese, which is a rather posh brand name from the Chinese consumer's perspective. Just weird that BYD didn't pick an English brand name for export markets, like it did for the Atto.
I bet getting service is a nightmare.
Spywagon. We don’t want anything the CCP have access to in the uk.
I feel as if Chinese cars never make it far in the market because apart from all other things when it comes to cars we like original stuff and just that…..
Am I the only one seeing a defender copy cat
With a Nissan patrol facelift 😅
incredible car
Okay the tech in this is insane.
Its not copying the Land Rover, when it is 10x times better than it…
Just get a bunch of rappers and celebrities to drive this car and put it in movies etc. you can shift the consumer perception of this generation so easily. 😅😂
No, than*, s.
Meanwhile in Philippines land cruiser is being hit by RPG😅
The yank & wank, first u yank em and wank em
130,000 pounds is a life-saving price. I suggest you dismantle a wheel, drive a few kilometers, and then decide whether to buy it.
Shouts from Chinese from all angles.
I don't even know how good it is ….You should be get a Landcruser for sure
We just need Drag Racing.
Awful video
When TOYOTA did the similar looking car, it was not copying
The front is ugly….
Inspired by, yes. Copying, not quite. It's what every brand does. They chase trends and design language that's sells.
The name or brand won’t survive next 7 years yet the British one is just unique and ain’t for everyone
you should review the zeekr 9x one of the best suvs china has ever made
How expensive is this thing
Looks shit. Why can’t the Chinese manufacturers make something original rather than blatantly copying other cars?
This guy loves chinese cars way too much. Wonder if he's getting payed?
I can’t stand the design of this car, it just irritates you. To busy, to old fashioned bling bling …
BYD wins on all angles, not to mention tech. They're in a class all by themselves….or along with other amazing Chinese brands. China 🇨🇳 is unstoppable.
