NEW Audi A5 review – the A4 is DEAD, but is this better?

Automobiles

The legendary Audi A4 is DEAD. In its place comes the new Audi A5 Saloon – a car that has to replace the A4, the A5 Coupe, and the A5 Sportback all at once. But does a new name and a sleek new look make it better than the BMW 3 Series?

In this video, we test the new Audi A5 to see if it can dethrone the BMW 3 Series as our favourite combustion-engined executive car. We investigate the controversial interior changes (where have the physical air-con controls gone?), test the new hatchback boot that Audi calls a “saloon”, and find out if cost-cutting has ruined the premium interior feel the A4 was famous for. We also tell you which engine makes the most sense.

  1. Is the new A5 a step forwards or backwards for Audi?

    a) Step forwards – I love the modern screens and new look! 🚀
    b) Step backward – Bring back the physical air-con controls and the A4 name! 🔙

  2. Full of plastic and screens we don’t need – the focus should be on the road and drive experience. The older models by far nicer and have more character. These blend into today’s car fad of everything looking the same – there’s no individuality anymore beyond the badge.

  3. As an American consumer, I don't recall any Audi having cloth seats and manual seat adjustments in the past 35 to 40 years. Is this a European thing?

  4. My mate’s brand new Volvo xc90 screen kept going to black screen, dead of winter and he had just turned all the heaters up to full when the screen disappeared and he had to drive for two and a half hours in a 27c temperature green house 😂😂😂😂 dials work so leave them alone, we want to drive cars not phones

  5. My 10 year old TT is much nicer than this on the inside. All modern VW/Audi are full of shiny creaky black plastic, yuk! The steering wheel controls alone would put me right off.

  6. I’ve been a happy driver of previous gen A5 and A4. I recently drove this new A5 and will hang onto my old car, thank you. In addition to everything this review points out, the tachometer situation is ridiculous – the wonderful old Virtual Cockpit has been destroyed – that black panel on the dash in front of the passenger is a source of dazzling and distracting reflections, and instead of an opening sunroof, you get one of those electro-chromic things. All round, this car is a big step back as a user experience.

  7. Audi sack the designers and start again….that passenger screen is an ugly elephant…the front grille…i drove the new Q5 and went ahead and bought the 2024 model instead. The 2023 A5 i drive looks way better. Audi have lost their way

  8. Design language is awful, they have really lost their way. Cheap, tacky shapes, interior couldn't be more drab and generally, I see nothing appealing about this car.

  9. Knowing what the A5 once was and seeing what it's turning in to is like seeing your favourite (highly respected) celebrity figure turn to drugs or seeing your favourite combat sports personality get CTE…
It's made all the more tragic because it was totally preventable.
    Sad.

  10. Another disappointing effort. The exterior is a master class in blandness and it’s unfortunate to see Audi down grading interior quality. I bought a new A4 B6 in 2003 because it was so desirable. The styling was classy and understated, and it had fantastic interior materials. I would take a 3 series over the A5 everyday of the week.
