The 2026 MG4 is here โ but is the former Car of the Year still the electric family hatchback to beat?
In this in-depth 2026 MG4 review, I take a detailed look at whatโs changed, whatโs improved, and whether this updated version still makes sense in todayโs ultra-competitive EV market. With new rivals arriving from brands like Volkswagen, BYD and Renault, the MG4 no longer has the segment to itself โ so does this update keep it ahead of the pack?
I cover pricing, trims, real-world range expectations, charging speeds, performance figures, practicality, boot space, interior quality, infotainment updates, ride comfort, handling, and ownership costs. If youโre considering switching to electric or looking for one of the best-value EVs in the UK, this review will help you decide whether the 2026 MG4 deserves a place on your shortlist.
As always on DefinitelyNotAGuru, this is a real-world, honest car review โ no fluff, no bias, just the facts that matter to buyers.

Does the car now have recharge planning?
Here in Thailand the Geely EX2 is already on sale (around ยฃ10k, I've ordered one) and it seems the MG4 urban is just being announced this week. It's shocking that the old MG4 cost ยฃ30k+ in the UK. Here it's less than half that.
The preferences short cut is a massive improvement based on the feedback I've heard.
Good review Jim. I've had an MG4 SE 51kwh for 2 years without any reliability problems.
Just a disappointing interior as you say and slightly keen emergency braking, although the software update helped that.
Great review as always
Jim, great review. One other point about rear wheel drive
vfront wheel drive. When driving through standing water, you don't get that scary torque steer twitch in a rear wheel drive. Let's hope it stops raining soon.๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป. Thank you Jim
love my mg4, school run dream. lfp battery
Iโve had my se standard range coming up for 3years in May when it goes back from a salary sacrifice scheme. Been all over the country in it. 33000 miles in and it hasnโt missed a beat. Iโm going for a cupra born 79kw v1 e boost next just for the improved range, faster charging speed and just fancy a change. The Mg4 has surpassed expectations though ๐
Why they turn off all safety? When calls safety lol.
My son in law has an MG EV. It broke down ie failed to start. It got towed to local MG dealer over 3 weeks ago. It still hasnโt been looked at and no spare car. Today he went to see if they had started on it, which they havenโt and was told that they are NOT accepting any more MGโs until further notice. So if you have a problem with any MG EV you have to take it to another City, outrageous!!!!!
Nice quick review. This would be the first EV that I would seriously be interested in buying. I currently have a MG ZS Hybrid which I think is a great car for the money.
Thatโs absolutely the interior from the MGS5 , but then its the same car essentially , it was the lack of centre console that let the MG4 down , iโve had a 2025 S5 for 3 months now and its been brilliant as long as you switch ADAS off as its rubbish also lack of peak on speedo binnacle it reflects in top of windscreen at night so you need sun visor down at night, otherwise its a very good car coming from 30 yrs of Mercs, bmws its a good car , time will tell ?
I have the original MG 4 and I fairly like it although the inside is a bit cheap feeling. In terms of drive & performance though it's great. The MG4 Urban puzzles me a lot since it's not an MG4 in any way whatsoever and it just confuses the hell out of people to call it that. It's like the BYD Dolphin Surf not being a Dolphin. What is it with Chinese cars and really stupid confusing nomenclature? As for "MG Pilot", setting it every time you get in the car is still balls. It should remember the setting under a driver profile and never bother the person to set it once its set.
There's so much much more out there now that's better and similar prices the ev landscape has moved on
I have a 24 plate on a lease it's the xpower it's been a good car but interior and technology is shit it will be going back next month. And also it's got the dreaded vibration at 65 to 70 which mg said is characteristic i would never have mg again. I feel sorry for people who brought one
Our 2022 MG4 is going back in the summer. Weโre looking at the MGS5 or S6 as a replacement as we have two more dogs to cart around now ๐
I think the interior is a big improvement, but weโve really loved our MG4. As much as Iโm always excited about shopping for a new car, we shall really miss this one when it goes
Really impressive update. A no-brainer and I know MG are discounting right off the bat by ยฃ1500 so as to match the UK grant discount which they do not get as it is Chinese built. But like on the last model MG4 and the MGS5 they will discount these by up to ยฃ8-10k pretty soon. Has the X-Power had its vibration issue sorted? (I know you did not test drive that model). Was really hoping they would do a 77kWh X-Power version instead of the usual 64kWh as the efficiency and range make it a rather limiting car for typical mid to long range journeys. And are the dealers going to improve??!! They seem to be pretty shocking across the board. MG are like the old Citroen.ย
Pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap and please don't come back to us with any problems..
Looks like they have abandoned the cheap, town second car sector for the long range touring class of car. For me it doesn't have enough luggage space for that so for now I'll keep my standard range MG4 round town fun car for a few more years
I love my MG4, it drives wonderfully. Very happy with it
As you know Jim, I'm not MGs greatest fan. However this looks much improved over the older model. Particularly the MG pilot preset you can do and the button on the wheel. In my opinion there should be a button on the dashboard to turn the Lane Assist on so there is no faffing about when you get in.

Love that colour
What is the battery chemistry for each version? LFP or NMC?
My wife has one. The issue we have is the software is really glitchy. It decides itโs 2011 constantly. Switches stuff back on constantly including the horrific lane keep automatic collision creator. The information on the screens seems to be a randomly generated โgameโ!
The software is, in summary, shocking. Hope itโs fixed.
The mg4 was a great car let down by a poor interior, that seem to been sorted now . I wonder are the dealership any better ?
Has it got an interior light in the back?! The old one didn't and was a pain in the backside for those with children in car seats. Thank you for the video by the way.
Love my MG4 Xpower not so much because of the power but the Alcantara seats and some other extra options that the other models did not not have. Will there be any differences between these models in regards to heated seats, steering wheel and seat movement?
Entertaining as always, thanks Jimbo ๐
My wife has a 2022 MG4. The latest firmware update sorted out the suicidal Lane Keep Assist. Value for money wise they are great even if the first gen versions like my wife's cars entertainment system is somewhat clunkyish. Small point but the interior of the first gen is very dark and MG didn't see fit to install any rear cabin lighting. Be interested to know if they remedied that at all as if you had small kids to put in the car messing about in the dark isn't the best. Like the new interior finish.
MGS5 interior shoe horned in Jim?
I wonder if they fixed the XPower vibration issue?
Think I'll wait until the public have completed the Chinese R&D . Next revision should be fine.
The price starts at under ยฃ24k…….

That looks very nice on the inside a great upgrade on the car
Looks great value, not quite my cup of tea but with everything considered itโs pretty good. Thanks for the video๐
