Insurance is the most misunderstood part of car rentals, especially when you move beyond platforms like Turo into private rentals.

In this video, I break down how insurance actually works in the car rental world, why so many operators get confused, and where most people go wrong when thinking about protection, liability, and risk.

We cover the high-level differences between platform-based rentals and private rentals, common misconceptions around coverage, and how serious operators approach insurance decisions responsibly as they scale. This isn’t about shortcuts or hacks, it’s about understanding the reality so you can make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes.

If you’re currently renting on Turo, thinking about private rentals, or planning to scale a car rental business, this video will give you clarity on a topic most people avoid or oversimplify.

This video is for educational purposes only. Insurance requirements and options vary by state, vehicle, and usage. Always consult licensed insurance professionals before making decisions.

  1. You are speaking too fast and with a lot of information i had to pause and rewind at times. 😂. Try to slow down a bit, viewers who want a fast pace can choose 1.25x or whatever.

  2. The one thing I see consistently about private rentals is operators only caring if the guest has comprehensive/collision insurance and not liability through 3rd party insurance such as bonzah & RentalCover, but to my understanding it is not legal for someone to drive without liability insurance even if the rental agreement shifts liability to them & many operators lean onto the Graves Amendment Act as a safety cushion, what do you think?

  3. My original plan was to stick with Turo but after 2 months in I see the advantage of Private Rentals. I've been using RentalCover to provide Insurance for the vehicle during the trip if the customer doesn't have full coverage. Then Roamly for off trip Insurance
