In our in-depth Kia EV2 review, we find out how good this new small electric SUV really is! As Kia’s smallest and cheapest electric car, the EV2 is expected to start at around £25,000. But how does it compare against other small EVs, including the Citroen e-C3 Aircross and Renault 5?
To find out, we take the 42.2kWh Standard Range model to the hilliest part of Lisbon. We tackle 12% gradients on cobbled streets and cruise at 75mph on the motorway to see exactly what the real-world range and efficiency are like when you push the EV2 hard.

In this review, we also take a good look at the 363-litre boot (which is significantly bigger than a Renault 5’s), find out how much space there is for passengers and explain why the EV2’s interior is very similar to its bigger brother’s, the Kia EV3’s.

With its chunky wheel arches and squared-off styling, the new EV2 looks like a shrunken EV3. But at just over four metres long, it's exactly the same length as a Vauxhall Corsa Electric and not even quite as tall as a Citroen e-C3! 📏🤔
So, we have to ask… Is the new Kia EV2 an SUV or just a regular small hatchback?
A) It’s definitely a small SUV! (Just look at the ride height and those wheel arches!) 🚙
B) It’s just a hatchback (It’s too small to be called an SUV) 🚗
C) Who cares about the label? (As long as it's a good, well-priced EV, I'm sold) ⚡

Lovely review in the place where I m from and I haven't been there for a while. Great memories, thank you Sir
Nice car, but a used Model 3 would be far superior, especially on miles per kWh
What I'd like to see the Kia EV2 and the other new competitors in this size category (Renault 5 etc.) compared too, is the most technologically advanced & space efficient original electric urban car; the BMW i3. Just how far have the new cars come?
Hard plastic = easy clear , Fabric = dust and stain collector.
Just a mass of distractions when you are driving
It’s a Kei Car 😂
We don't class any of those mentioned as SUVs, they're all crossovers
The spiritual successor to the soul
Better the new BYD Atto 2
I'll buy one when it comes with awd, and 300 mile range.
A front facia like a IKEA locker.
Boycott all SUVs
To anyone who considers EV with less thsn 300mi – DONT!! I warned you! I drive EVs from 2008, currently on my 7th, so had the pleasure to drive all kind of them and it is absolutely true that EV with range below 300mi when new is nothing but a ewaste. You'll still need a 2nd car, 2nd insurance, 2nd maintenance… What's the point, just buy a decent EV and live hassles free.
Real world range is shit. EVs with the new tax per mile… yeah us regular folks aren't going near them. I have enough inconvenience in my busy life living in a flat in London. Parking is hard enough in most cities.. let alone charging these wastes of time conveniently. I can get a perfectly good petrol or non plug in hybrid doing real world range of 300+ miles that I can fill up in 2 minutes. Why would anyone who's got their wits about them look at these things? It's got no mass audience buying these cars, can we focus on realistic cars? I'm done with car channels pushing small EVs (and EVs in general)that won't sell, give pure range anxiety and will have truly awful deprication value.
SUV with wheel arch condoms.
I never even want to be closer than 100 meters away from any vehicle with those stats.
It's almost taller than the guy. 02:56
So here is a Brit, in Portugal, reviewing a Korean car, built in Slovakia, registered in Germany.
Pls pls stop engeliiish crap of miles, Lbs etc on Euro it's metric METRIC😮
Enjoyed your review but your alike car models don't exist in Australia
Euro crap went home to Stellantis. Hoorah
Kia no probs like Toyota stuff 🎉
Maybe in future, compare range to Volkswagen ID 2 ALL (Polo EV) and with Renault Twingo EV?
It is good that more smaller EVs are being offered. Just wish Hyundai didn't hit every branch of the ugly tree with its offerings. As to this car, literally nothing stands out. Performance is good but it handles like a barge, so a pointless 0-60 capability. Everything else is just ok. Alas, it will sell well for being an ugly "ok". I will stick with my BMW i3 that does perform AND handle AND doesn't look ugly.
Nice car. I have owned a BMW i3 33kWh model for over 8 years. Range is 100-135 miles depending on weather and type of driving. This is plenty of range for >99% of journeys. We have a Volvo XC90 sitting on the drive that is 6 years old now and we have done only 33,000 mile since new because we use the i3 all the time (it’s more fun and suitable for everyday driving). We will keep the i3 until it dies – but that could be a while as with over 50k miles it has only 1% battery degradation. This Kia is what I would buy now if I was looking for a small everyday car…and it’s a lot cheaper than the BMW was when I bought it (about £35k in 2017).
It's an SUV in my view. Bring back sedans!
7:53 23 missed calls? Hope its not that annoying Chinese recorded voice pretending to be from the NHS!
The natural competitors are rather the R4 and the e-C3 AirCross and/or the Vauxhall Frontera(?) This is a small SUV, thus has a more upright front and boxy shape to cope with cargo capacity. And later in the year the Volkswagen Group will bring 2 competitors to the EV2 to the market. Don't know how well the VW version will do but I think the EV2 and the Škoda Epiq could have a good battle in the Mini-SUV class.
And if Ford pretends to bring a new Fiesta based on the R5, it might also be a Ford Fusion based on the R4 in the plans.
As big as an EV needs to be.
You mean my 200 mile trip to see my parents? You mean there are cars that can’t do that without stopping to charge on the way? What kind of life do you lead? Lol
most will need just one or two seats realistically.
my next car, thanks for the review
Looks so much like a Citroen C3 😂
Comparison agaonst the MG would be helpful
The lack of a 4-seat version is a mistake. I've a young family – they need boot space, not leg room now, but in 10 years time, they could be hulking teens and need the leg room.
Also, the review didn't mention – does it have a heat pump? Electric Seats? 'cos you know, the UK ain't Lisbon.
Thanks for the range-focused review of this car. Although I’m not one of those range-anxious petrol or diesel drivers, I can’t help but think about how often I’d need to visit a charging station with the short-range Kia EV2. Driving around 60 km per day, I’d have to recharge every four days. For those without home charging, visiting a charger more often than you visit a loved one sounds bizarre to me.
Dude two things.
One Turkey hair asap and second -eat more oats. buddy that “burgundy” t shirt is not a good look
"Extreme conditions"..18c, hills, actual roads, passive weather conditions. Yeah definitely 'extreme'….lol
It would be good to compare the EV2 to the upcoming VW group trio, particularly the Skoda Epiq. Any news on when you'll be getting to test the production Epiq and it's UK release date? Thanks
a bit fishy the trip computer and calculated efficiency can be different by 14%..?
I've no idea what to do. This car looks great. I wanted to wait for the ID cross. But thats out much later
I like it but would like it to come in 4 wheel drive option
NIO: Firefly!
It's shame it has the ugliest rear since the 90's Scorpio.
4 seats please Kia. UK 😊
