Mat’s got his hands on one of the most highly anticipated comeback cars of the decade – the all-new Honda Prelude!

He’s been lucky enough to drive some incredible Japanese sports cars over the past few years. From the legendary hybrid NSX through to the ultra-focused Civic Type R, Mat has had his hands on some of the best-handling cars in the world. But how does Honda’s revived 1990s icon stack up in the modern era?

Let’s start with a look at the stats.

Starting with the engine, it’s powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid setup that produces 180hp and 315Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via an e-CVT transmission, but Honda has fitted a clever new ‘S+ Shift’ system that simulates an 8-speed gearbox with virtual rev-matching! Because it’s carrying a battery, the car weighs approximately 1,480kg. In terms of value, it has a starting price of around £41,000!

But it’s not just a standard eco-box underneath. Honda has actually borrowed some serious hardware directly from the Civic Type R! The Prelude features the exact same dual-axis front suspension to eliminate torque steer, specially tuned adaptive dampers, and a set of massive 4-piston Brembo brakes hiding behind 19-inch alloys.

Inside, the Prelude features a driver-focused 2+2 layout. It comes loaded with a 9-inch infotainment screen, heavily bolstered sports seats, and a sporty D-shaped steering wheel. Oh, and the rear seats fold down so you can actually fit a decent amount of luggage in the back!

So it looks fantastic, but can a 180hp hybrid genuinely deliver the thrills we expect from a sports coupe? And is it a worthy successor to the legendary Prelude name? You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Craig for lending us his 1999 Prelude for this review.

  1. It looks an odd shape because the front end is way too short and stubby, they tried to enhance the front with over complex styling which does not work well either. The rear seating is a joke and not having an actual gearbox means this car is a no go for me.

  2. I still don't know the price of this car but I know they want a nice penny for it and it has a tape deck in 2026 that's crazy and the interior looks cheap

  3. Just looks like yet another goofy modern car. Angular, plasticy, lifeless. Goofy screen gauge cluster, goofy automatic transmition, goofy interior, everythings goofy and overpriced.

  4. I almost didn't watch this video since I don't care much for the new prelude, boredom this morning got the better of me. If you'd put the old prelude in the thumbnail I would have watched it sooner. His old one looks absolutely fantastic. Never would have thought about buying one but now I've seen his it's absolutely stunning

  5. Realistically, who, with a baby in the house, is going to buy a Prelude as their daily? I mean, you can always find things to complain about, but this is just not a car meant for people who have to take babies or passengers around in the back. Those people can get the Civic. The Prelude's target consumers are mainly 50-somethings whose kids are out of the house and who want something a little sporty but not too crazy; people experiencing a midlife non-crisis.

  6. I have a bugbear of motoring journos moaning that some buttons or features aren't the same as in a VW or Ford. It's a problem if you review different cars every week. Most ppl buy or lease a car for years, the reverse gear position (..cruise control/ radio controls/boot release button … delete as appropriate) is not a problem for ppl who will own and live with the car for years

  7. The worst thing about this car is the price. Given that most similar cars in it's segment are disappearing (such as the TT, Lexus LC, Jaguar F-Type, Peugeot RCZ…), this would have been a golden opportunity. But at over 50,000€ why would I buy this car when I could buy the Mazda MX-5 or even the F-Type from the same brand, which is more practical for everyday use and has almost twice the CV?

  8. so a car to buy at age 18 and sell on as soon the first child comes and needs to be put in a child seat on the backseat.
But wait ….. at age 18 you could'ntafford one.

  9. That's an eyesore of a car! That is absolutely ugly AF, and to be called a prelude is is insulting at the very least! They should be ashamed for calling that hunk of💩 and comparing it to the OG car! If they gave me one for free, I'd list that shit on carwow ASAP!!!

  10. I am quite sure that you can use Android Auto wireless in the Prelude. Like in other Honda models (HR-V, CR-V), it is not configured for that by the factory, but you can configure it yourself in the service menu.
