Automobiles

  1. I had a drive of one of these the other day, I agree with what you were saying about the regen braking, it does feel rather like a switch, very jerky. Overall great value for money though.

  2. Test drove one today and I couldn't believe how good it was. We were shopping for more expensive EV sedans (Seal and Model 3) but decided to try something cheaper as I'm a bit concerned the EV world is still in a bit of a transitional phase with all this super fast charging tech on the horizon. Wow I'm glad we did. The throttle response had more off-the-line shove than the Seal Premium (even though the Seal is a quicker car to 100, initial throttle response has a weird dead zone that was putting me off a bit) and the car cornered suprisingly flat. It really has a fun chuckable quality that I felt was missing in the smoother but heavier Seal. Is the Seal a better car? Probably. But at this point in time, for $20k less, I think we'll be driving home in the Jaecoo – presumably after waiting a few months for the next shipment.

  3. another selling out of your soul…. promoting junk i dare say you would never carry your family in outside testing….. junk Chingwah crap no one else globally wants. 1 in 10 chinese car brands fail within years so 8 year warranty might die in 2….. buy cheap buy twice…. i WON'T BUY a brand that doesn't have a car 2nd hand for sale thats 20-30 years old and still carry parts….. thats all your chingwah brands if they don't rust out before that time but you won't find one for sale 5-10years old which is an alarm bell….. always look at the 2nd hand market as you don't want to take it to the grave…..UNSUBBED

  4. As with all Chinese car brands not named BYD, how long will this brand last in Australia? The market simply isn't big enough to support 22 different Chinese entrants. The review is pointless if the brand, it's dealers and spare parts network dies. BYD, MG, GWM (and possibly Geely Group) are the only Chinese brands with enough presence and foothold in Australia to last for sure into the future.

  5. Something I am disappointed about from reviews of this J5 EV, is that not one I have seen so far mentions the cooling system, even when Australia is somewhere where that can really matter given the high temps we can get in certain regions. This has an air cooling system rather than a liquid cooling system which means the battery can degrade more in the heat we have. Some people may be perfectly fine with that compromise for the price but it should be addressed by people who are “experts”. The channel is literally called car expert. Experts should be talking about this and what it means.

  6. Paul. With a new Chinese EV popping out every week, perhaps you could spend some time looking into the actual brands and car makers to assess the real-world practicalities of purchasing one of these vehicles.

Dealer network, servicing, warranty, spare parts, supply chain capacity, etc.

While it’s all well and good to showcase these vehicles it would be great to have some understanding of what potential purchasers are in for.

  7. Howdy Paul, worth noting that the Jaecoo infotainment system has a vehicle settings area which is impressive. There is settings for adjusting all of the below;
    Regenerative Braking Mode
Steering force mode associated with driving
    Steering Force Mode
    Brake pitch control
    Brake pitch control sensitivity
Brake sensation linked to driving mode
    Brake Sensation Mode

i've found that most reviews of EV's really dont go into these options / settings all found in the owners manual (Available for download on Jaecoo's site),

  8. Left sprite, nice. Claude says – It reads as a confident, knowledgeable flex — the person clearly knows watches. It’s not flashy-for-flashy’s-sake, but anyone who knows will notice.

  9. Paul's been reviewing cars for 2 decades of his life and yet he still doesn't know how to switch off traction or stability control in a modern car lol 🙂

  10. In theory if u want max range u should be coasting as much as possible and regening as less as possible situation permitting as regening still has internal losses. Better than friction brakes 100% but not perfect.

  11. You'd probably want some PPF on that big flat panel on the front, might as well get some matte PPF on the shiny interior bits while there. This actually looks half decent, apart from the lack of switchgear.

  12. Hi. Thanks for the review mate. I bought a J5 a couple of weeks ago and overall, very impressed. It's not perfect but it's positives far outweigh its negatives. Biggest gripe I have is with the regen. Coming from a Tesla MY albeit 3 years ago, the regen is pathetic and in the higher regen settings middle and high, it just does odd things to the way it drives. I keep it in low setting all the time. The steering is a bit as you explain it, very direct but the car sort of wanders a bit. I don't find this a major problem though. Biggest frustration I have is with the weird charging routine I have to go through to enable the Tesla Wall Connector v3 to charge the car. It's not a simple task like on our BYD Atto 3 where you power up the TWC, plug it into Atto 3 and away you go. Oh no. This is, power the TWC up, plug in, lock the car – the charge port door stays open when plugged in – come back, unlock car, lock car, walk away and after a while, maybe 5 minutes, it starts to charge. I thought it may be a software update on the TWC which I did but no improvement. It does charge on 3 phase at 10.3kW/Hr which is great, it's just the process required to get it charging. If I use the supplied 10A granny charger, not a problem however so it may be a small incompatibility problem with the Tesla unit. Moving on. I was disappointed to find a 12V lead acid LT battery – think problems with Atto 3's, KIA, Hyundai et al. On the Atto I junked the standard lead acid for a LiFePo 4 battery about three years ago and that has been working perfectly so will likely do the same on the J5. Overall though, the car itself, the styling, build quality, comfort, interior space, overall ride, transmission controls – just like Tesla, screen and software, Continental tyres, heated & ventilated seats, just about everything, is utterly amazing especially for $37K drive away. Very happy with the purchase. Fix the regen and it will be even better.

  13. What I've noticed with your reviews of electric cars is you never mention how long it takes to charge the battery to full.
You keep going on about the different charging options 240/12 volt and the amperage but never how long to charge!
I think that's what people would really want know.
