NEW Nissan Micra vs Renault 5 – we’ve tested both EVs back-to-back! | What Car?

Automobiles

The new Nissan Micra and Renault 5 are virtually identical underneath – they’re even built in the same factory! So why is one so much cheaper? And which is the better all-round electric car?

We test these two small EVs back-to-back to see if the retro Renault 5 drives as well as the modern-looking Micra. We also conduct a real-world efficiency test over 130 miles to discover out which has the longer range, find out how many suitcases we can fit in each car’s boot, and decide how useful the Micra’s exclusive “one-pedal” driving mode really is.

  1. Acrually the parts aren't the same althoug built to the same spec reason why the Micra is only £1500 from ecg although it has been confirmed that it will be getting full grant which the Micra today as now using EU parts and will be delivered on 2nd week April if it doesn't get pushes back. I placed the order in September

  2. Spotted a cheap-out detail: the manual climate temp toggle switch stays the farthest left switch in the cluster even though it's a right-hand-drive car. At least Renault banks the switches in the right direction though.

  3. In this video two guys review two of the exact same cars, except for minor body panel changes. In my opinion the R5 just looks better though. I personally bought the Alpine A290 GTS, which really is different, despite the same body frame and battery (different suspension, brakes, more powerful drive system, subframes, interior, software, wheels and tyres, car is wider, all different body panels).

  4. And who in Nissan thought this would be a good idea? Sell a Nissan R5 in Europe? a car with more than 40 years of history and it is engrave in our minds …. holly s … and we still ask why the world is how it is.

  5. It’s a simple choice really…..one of the cars is a legend, the other is a Micra! I don’t like EVs as I’m a born petrol head, love driving real cars with manual gearboxes and I spend my free time working on cars. However the R5 is the only EV I’d actually want to buy, looks great and is a great testament to the two R5’s I had when I was a kid.

  6. Since buying a Renault 5 I have had numerous people stop me in car parks to say how much they like it’s looks. Never had that with a car before and fairly sure that wouldn’t happen with the Micra.

  7. 4 suitcases my arse.
I bet they're carry on cases at best. And does the tailgate actually shut?
These days you'll struggle to get 3 full-sized suitcases in a medium sized SUV with at least 100 litres more space.

  8. Visually – like the look of both cars.
Renault 5 for me (in yellow or maybe green) & a blue Micra for 'er indoors'.
    But it will never happen!
    Why?
'Cos I'm not a fan of EVs.
    Limited mileage between recharge.
Transitional battery technology (it's still being developed).
Drop off in performance in cold weather.
Lugging all that dead weight around as the batteries expel their energy.
Petrol cars become lighter the more of their energy you consume.
EVs become (relatively) heavier as the batteries drain away.
So I'm not having an EV.
Shame they're not making petrol versions….
