Due to arrive in Australia within the third quarter of 2026 is the Mazda CX-6e, a fully electric midsize SUV born from a partnership with Changan Automotive.
Built on the same platform as the Deepal S07, this Chinese-built Mazda has been teased with a circa-$55,000 price point.
That price would make the entry grade cheaper than a Tesla Model Y, Kia EV5 or Zeekr 7X.
So is this new SUV from Mazda worth waiting for? Production specialist Tom Place investigates in our first hands-on look at the CX-6e.

can we kill big pano roofs already? I rather have a functional opening roof instead. That screen is just ridiculous. Nice car overall but nothing unique about it.
600 km range minimum ! I really like the look of it.
But really, how practical is that screen? How often does a passenger interact with the controls? If Mazda want to give the front seat passenger easy access to their own climate and seating controls, then a small, dedicated screen in front of them would be a far more efficient use of resources than this monstrosity. The driver can really only access, what, 50% of it laterally? Seems like the marketing department snuck this one past the engineers when they weren't looking.
That screen: looks like the culmination of DJ turntable wars of the 1990s…three turntables and six microphones.

as a non luxury brand in the segment, it definitely have a luxurious interior and looks the part, definitely more stylistic and have a great proportion definitely atleast compared to the Tesla

This with the 6e are actually nice looking cars. Even though they are an EV I’d consider it just based on looks
No dual vents in the back row is a big miss. Do the front and rear seats have heating, cooling and massage? Most (if not all) Chinese brands offer these as standard in all their new models. Absolutely crazy to think you're getting more luxury items in Chinese brands at a fraction of the cost of European luxury brands. With high fuel costs, inflation and interest rates rising I wonder at what point people refuse to pay the brand tax and make the switch to cheaper more luxurious Chinese brands.
Ironically, NOT being a Japanese car is what will make it a quality EV.
And thankfully, it doesn't have the traditional Mazda design of the CX-5, therefore it isn't boring and ugly.
In Cambodia, people used this model for a while and software and hardware problems appeared more and more,! We questioned about reliability? Nice looking car but …..
