This is the new Volkswagen Golf R, which in Mk 8.5 guise is more expensive and more powerful than ever.
It’s a mean machine, but also entirely liveable. And it’s so, so loveable.
But almost $80,000 for a VW GOLF?!

i30N dst for 60k$ makes its competition very poor.. next only M2
A dozen reveiws or so ago you said nobody needs this much power and the car was similar?
yawn, never understood the excitement over these cars. just boring n cheap looking.
this version hasn't improved anything.
hard pass
The Audi S3 has the same engine with the same power and torque figures. Pity that VW interior has too much cheap looking piano black plastic and haptic buttons. My supposedly inferior Skoda Octavia RS is much nicer inside.
Buy a used Scirocco R, Stage 2 upgrades. Its will punish this shopping trolley. It looks far better from stock, sits lower, and its 2 door. Save yourself 50k.
Tried the Golf R…and did a direct comparison with the BMW M135…they are both good although I’d probably take the BM. I actually bought a JCW countryman as similar performance, but better space all round. Preferred the MIni infotainment, lack of piano black inside…the steering wheel controls are much better in the JCW as well…love my choice and don’t regret not buying the Golf R. Also test drove the B Spec WRX and the Type R…both great cars, i could easily own. I still wish I could have bought the Type R Honda as well…however price and availability were a problem at the time.
with this type of money ,I buy BYD seal performance much luxury and faster from 0-100 k only 3,8 second
WOW….that's a bit of coin. Very desirable car however.
Surely make a six speed manual. Pussbox
For that kind of power, your economy figure you experienced is impressive and livable. Not for me, but agree exceptional set of wheels.
Having owned STi, R32 and Megane RS I’m getting the i30n premium I can’t justify an extra $20k on the R and reviews I’ve seen on the Hyundai have been very positive
Not worth the money
Id rather buy the type r it has buttons and dials for climate control
The i30n is also better and 20k less
Hi mate. I’ve notice you’ve pointed out the “clima” control in a couple of German made cars. It just means climate in German and is pronounced Klee-ma.
Cupra VZX is far better value, negotiate hard people!
2026 gti please
8.5 facelift has fixed the exterior design up nicely, though the forged warmenau wheels should be standard. The interior is still a mess unfortunately. Dropping the wagon is a mistake too. I see a good half dozen MK7/7.5 R wagons on my daily commute and surely they won't want an SUV to replace them… The DSG tuning, esc/magna rear differential are highlights for sure though, a much more cohesive package than the 8. Hopefully the rumours are true and the 5 pot from Ingolstadt finds it way under the bonnet in the not too distant future too. I like your suggested alternatives, though I'd include the Cupra Leon VZX in that list too. Keep up the great work!
$80K for a civic SMH
I stopped watching when i saw the price😅 but before I left, I left my LIKE as support for the channel.
I'd pick the Type R, a proper driver's car. This is fast and refined, but it's incredibly boring in appearance and driving ease.
I love this channel, but you really need to do 0-100 times. It's the only knock I have. Go well.
The steering wheel is a write off
So this or a gti for daily use and fun twists?
$82k if you want akrapovic… another $2k for sunroof… as much as this is a tour de force i think of the other awesome stuff you can do with $75k and this isnt it…i reckon this is for the rich guy with a GT3 or Audi R8 and this is his daily… also by 2030 a Golf R might be $100k plus…
71K for VAG long term reliability? This is another car that only really makes sense on a 2 or 3 year lease.
you could buy an MG4 Xpower, and have enough $ left over to put solar on your roof🤣
What about Corolla GR
Had a Mk7 GTI, great car just watch out for water pump issues, they don't seem to like the heat here in Australia.
Looks like a great little boy racer car. But too many negatives. 1 Price 2 DSG 3 I hate road noise 4 VW overpriced service costs 5 No bloody spare even a space saver. 👎 Haval H6 PHEV just as fast and way more practical only negative no bloody spare. 🤔
Why would you buy this thing over a Cupra Formentor VZx? The Golf is smaller, uglier, more expensive, larger turning circle, awful haptic buttons on the wheel, less ground clearance and a worse ride. I could go on and on…
The ownership time and the warranty are the same.
Why didn’t you use the launch control for the 0-100? KMH? It makes an immense difference. I get 4.0-4.1 second 0-60 MPH with it.
Without Akraprovic at the price, madness!
What is the Chinese option to take to a track day?
From what i have read the Type R will be $85,500 DA when the next and probably final batch arrives.
Gotta love a hot hatch even if it is from a terrible company.
