WE HAVE FINALLY REVIEWED THE NEW MG S5 EV!!
The 2026 MGS5 EV might be one of the most important new cars MG has launched in years. It’s a compact electric SUV that looks good, drives surprisingly well, and now starts from around $39,990 drive-away in Australia. On paper, that makes it one of the best value EV SUVs you can buy right now.
But after spending a lot of time with the top-spec MG S5, we discovered a few things that MG may need to address.
From a driver’s seat that doesn’t feel quite right, to glitchy software, and even a strange power restriction issue we experienced during testing, there are some question marks around what is otherwise a very impressive electric SUV.
So the big question is:
Is the 2026 MG S5 actually a bargain EV… or are there some catches you need to know about before buying one?
In this video, Matt and Jacob from CarSauce take a detailed look at the design, interior, practicality, technology, driving experience, efficiency, and value of the new MG S5 to see if it’s worth considering over rivals like the BYD Atto 3, Leapmotor C10, GAC Aion V, and Geely EX5.
Let us know in the comments – would you buy an MG S5 EV?

Mines faultless you must have got a shit one
Add this to the ever growing list of cars I would never buy. Glitchy tech and poor customer support, no thanks!
Yep the seat rails are prone to premature wear. Try a pre 2010 Honda Jazz. Their seat rails are … not great after 15 years
after a couple of years with mg4, I wouldn't buy this brand again. zero after sales with all sorts of sneaky dismissive tactics to avoid addressing issues. no software updates. glitchy and buggy computer and display unit. they drive well, that's it. there are far better Chinese options in 2026.
People listen to what you say and take it as advice. I think saying "if you can look past quality control…its a good deal" is not what you actually think, maybe playing it safe with your words?
Be honest; it's just not good enough! Seeing all those issues means I would never advise my parents or kids to buy one, or even have it on the consider list Would you?
Puss doesn’t know we’re to piss on it.
My observations:
1. Side mirror control location is a bit in uncomfortable location.
2. No front ultrasound sensors.
3. Shows rear sensor distance in cm in 360 view.
4. No hysterysis in displays, so data jumps up and down.
5. Tap screen looks a bit slugish. Works, but stutters a bit.
im here for the tuxedo cat. ty for delivering.
i would steer clear of MG cars i own a 2023 MG4 x power which had the vibration which every reviewer seemed to ignore.. finally fought with MG to get a fix and got 1 not without hoops and BS ( massive job including motors out subframes replaced etc etc i would guess around the 10k to fix in parts and labour if it wasnt done under warranty ) next big issue was i kept getting a motor fault no reverse able to be selected after charging the car eventually after it finally died it had blown the high voltage module 6 weeks in MG and it was fixed .. now im getting the same error message again ( let the dealer know but they cant really do much till it dies again ) so waiting for it to die again ..
MG Australia is flat out disgusting no phone number and chat never does nothing the they will get back to you soon is BS,,
Is my the car full of faults no but its after market service is disgusting and MG are a cheap arse car company so expect some problems !!
Ive entered mg cars. Theyre soulless piece of…
What’s wong
I liked the MG or the Haval Jolion and was almost ready to buy, but at 60+ years of age I couldn't handle A car warning me every single time I look away.. traffic is bad so you HAVE to not just look straight ahead.
I have the S5 for about 6 months now, and have none of the issues you pointed out. I found it the least intrusive car, I have driven compare the others in this class. so it seems like you may have a Friday built car, that has been through the round with other reviewers. I do a lot of long distance drive, the car drive wells and even thou it's a tad underpowered, it handles well on the freeway. The S5 is also very efficient averaging about 12-13kw/100km on suburbian drives and about 17kw/100km on the highway. The only issue I seem to have is the android/Bluetooth muting.
What’s the catch? It’s an EV, it’s really ugly and really stupid.
A friend of ours bought an MG 12-18 months ago. It's always having issues. It's now in again and they want it for over a week. They have no loan cars left so she is Ubering everywhere at her expence….😞….She "isn't happy Jan" .
This is my wifes daily drive. We have done 12,000 kms and it has been faultless. I was NOT an MG fan before she got it but I love driving this car. We live in a very hilly area and this car smashed the hills and twisty bits and feels way more powerful than my ICE car. I NEVER have a single bing or bong, one button to set all my preferences turns everything off (you obviously missed something). I use android auto, my teenage daughter uses apple car play no problem but would like a better stereo as the speakers are not amazing. My wife does 95% of driving under 80 kays so gets excellent efficiency in the 12kw/100kms range. Taking it on the highway at 100 you get 18 so range at that speed is not great.
Omg…if you had all the warning systems turned off and it was still beeping at you every minute….that would drive me crazy
Didn’t hear the Jaecoo J5 as an option, just ordered one after test driving the other day. A lot of car for the money.
I really wanted to like this car but I found the seat bench so shorty – I had no under thigh support. Just in general the seats felt like they were built for children not full size adults.
The person who carried out the pre-delivery and let that crooked badge go through deserves a slap in the back of the head.
How, HOW have digital instrument cluster screens without a binnacle or “shroud”, ever been allowed under ADR regulations?? The government still requires a “Blue-slip” on a brand-new-spankin’ car, because *quote from my local RMS- “You’de be surprised the number of un-roadworthy vehicles that enter Australia”… but they allow this crap.
Then NSW drivers get 5yrs without annual roadworthy on new vehicles, but what’s to say I didn’t modify the crap out of my new rig since I bought it???
Loose seat, dim screen, tiny wheels relative to the chassis, poorly calibrated safety alerts, poor performance figures, … too many compromises even at this price point.
Appreciate the detailed review.
A lot of MGs have misaligned badges.
And the seats break
And they have heaps of random electrical problems
And they have random engine problems
And you can't get parts for them
And they rust like mad.
Just buy a quality second hand car. This is not a good idea.
Maybe the battery was overheating.
Another China washing machine. Painted in boring Haier white.
I think it's a bit too expensive. The 49kWh versions are a tough sell, and choosing the bigger battery puts the price awfully close to some of the more sorted competition.
An MGS5 62kWh or a Skoda Elroq Select 60 for a bit more? I'd pick the Skoda every day of the week.
It’s a pity there are so many small issues, and that safety tech should be way better. If they fixed these things it should be a best seller and on my list for next car.
Shame MG didn’t bring the 170kw motor for this. The top spec has the better motor in the UK! Rear drive chassis with more powerful motor would make it a lot better. And be a much better match for competition like Geely EX5. Come on MG. Bring the good stuff.
MGs consistently have a lot of quality issues but I have not been able to find a RWD EV that drives as well as my MG4 for the $31k it cost.
I suspect you didn't turn off the speed limit warning in the sat nav. That one had me stumped for a couple of weeks. I don't have any warnings on my s5ev when I use the mg custom button.
The biggest issue most owners have is with bluetooth for android auto and apple car play. Symptoms that many of us are having is music glitching, microphones dropping out after about a minute of call time on hands free calling. I don't think MG has even recognised there is a problem. Other than those issues, I really do like the car.
Yes, it is a bit underpowered but it really does drive nice. It feels like you are driving the car and not the car driving you, like front wheel drive cars.
Nah. BYD Atto 3 or Geely EX5 would be better. Much better software and assistant systems calibrations and no any weird power restrictions.
so many QC problems I won't even touch it even if the price is good
have you never heard of a dongle for the back seats.
I own an MG4 and I really like it, not so sure by making the car bigger and heavier but keeping the same motor is a great idea ?
Same sort of conclusion I drew after a test drive, felt decent but nothing outstanding in any particular area. I’m keen to test the Leapmotor b10 – the Kia ev3 is my fallback right now.
Wrecking the driver's seat while filming the rear seat OF content eh, tisk tisk 😂😂 what did MG say?
The 10 year warranty catch is there's no guarantee any of us will be here by then 😂😂😂
RIP Tesla?
a lot better looking than the previous MG EV models
looks like MG is now adopting the cyberster front design on their other EVs too…
